An Interactive way to learn financial skills

Project Overview

My Role

Storybook AR: Interactive Financial Literacy for Kids

This project combines a physical storybook with an augmented reality (AR) mobile app to teach young children essential financial skills in an engaging and interactive way. Through storytelling and AR-enhanced experiences, children can learn concepts like saving, spending wisely, and the value of money in a fun and immersive format. The integration of AR brings the story to life, reinforcing key lessons through interactive elements and gamified learning. This project aims to make financial literacy more accessible and enjoyable for young learners, fostering essential money management skills from an early age.

As the sole designer for this project, I was responsible for the end-to-end development of the prototype, ensuring both the physical storybook and AR experience were seamlessly integrated. I conceptualized and executed the AR functionality, bringing interactive elements to life to enhance engagement and learning. Additionally, I developed the financial literacy syllabus, carefully structuring the lessons to be age-appropriate and effective. Beyond the educational framework, I also crafted the storyline and plot, ensuring that financial concepts were woven naturally into an engaging narrative. This comprehensive role required a balance of technical execution, storytelling, and educational design to create an immersive learning experience for young children.

Problem Statement

Young children lack accessible and engaging tools to learn basic financial skills such as saving and budgeting, leaving parents without effective ways to teach these crucial habits early.

The Final Product

Reflection and Key Takeaways

This project evolved far beyond its initial scope, with multiple additions shaping it into a more immersive and educational experience. What started as a simple financial literacy storybook expanded to include an actual AR implementation, significantly enhancing engagement and interactivity. One of the biggest challenges was writing a compelling and educational story that seamlessly integrated financial concepts while remaining fun and engaging for young readers. Balancing storytelling with instructional design required careful structuring and revisions.

Another major hurdle was developing the prototype, as it required not only visual and UI/UX design but also technical execution. Learning Adobe Aero from scratch to implement AR features was a steep learning curve, demanding experimentation and problem-solving to create a smooth and engaging experience. Despite the challenges, this project reinforced the importance of adaptability, interdisciplinary skills, and user-centered design. It highlighted the value of interactive learning and pushed me to explore new tools and techniques, ultimately shaping a well-rounded and impactful product.

The Synopsis

Treasure Town was once a lively and magical place, where a dazzling fountain powered by six enchanted gems brought joy and prosperity to everyone. But one fateful day, the gems vanished, leaving the town in ruin. Mia, Leo, and their playful squirrel Smiley uncover a hidden prophecy that reveals a daring quest: they must find the lost gems—the Amber of Value, Topaz of Earning, Ruby of Saving, Sapphire of Budgeting, Diamond of Spending Wisely, and Emerald of Sharing—to restore their home.

Guided by riddles and facing mysterious challenges, the trio ventures into dark forests, enchanted markets, and ancient mazes, uncovering vital financial skills—how to understand the value of money, earn, save, budget, share, and spend wisely—at every step of their adventure. But danger lurks in every shadow, and the stakes grow higher with each step.

Can Mia, Leo, and Smiley outwit the forces working against them and bring the magic back to Treasure Town—or will the town’s future crumble into dust forever?
